The past month I've been following closely the photomanipulation submissions in DA and I have a few observations to share:
a. Inspiration and skill are not balanced: I see I lot of technically superb works that are reiterations of a certain theme that I would call "Emotional in a Fantasy World". These kind of works usually depict a female figure in a semi-real, surreal or completely unreal environment, doing usually a kind of gesture with 'significance': looking own reflection in a pond or mirror, playing a violin, dancing, turning back etc.
b. As a consequence of a. there is not much of story telling: yes, you can wonder how did she (or he) got there, you can propose your own version of the 'story', but the pictures themselves give very few clues as to the before and after, rendering the scene more or less statically as if in an eternal immobility.
c. Complexity preferred over simplicity: yes, combining 10 photos requires skill. Yes, textures give a certain allure (although they tend to darken the images. Yes, vests are unique tools to transform a contemporary person to a long time lost one, but these means have to be highly justified by the end, not used for the shake of it.
Who am I to criticize, you might ask, and under what right, since my own artistic production is limited and, possibly, poor. Well, let's say I can't help it. No one can. There is always a critic berried inside each of us. The critic is the eye of the beholder....
